'On the Water' is about my escape from Vietnam by sea. At the centre of the painting is a child (myself), surrounded by water which serves as both a place of refuge and a threat. A flower symbolises hope, while a hand reaching out in the background hints at the real dangers: fear of the unknown, pirate attacks, hunger and being stranded in a foreign land.

 

I don't remember much from my childhood before the age of four, except for the moment on the boat when the pirate fired his gun into the sky. He wanted to intimidate us and force us to hand over our belongings. That's why my memories begin at sea. This piece invites us to reflect on the moment that changed everything.
